Thursday Is Winter Weather Awareness Day

Northwest Iowa — It’s early November. That means the harvest is moving closer to completion, college football is in full swing, it seems like every day is windy, and it’s time for Winter Weather Awareness Day.

Winter Weather Awareness Day is a time to refresh ourselves about the hazards of winter, and how to become “Weather-Ready” in our preparation.

Todd Heitkamp of the National Weather Service station in Sioux Falls tells us more.

This winter, the National Weather Service will be no longer issue Blizzard Watches. Heitkamp says all advisory-level situations will be handled by a singe hazard designation.

This winter we should see National Weather Service forecasts that include a “probability” of snow amount. Heitkamp says the probablitities will be more accurate the closer the storm comes to the area.

The National Weather Service station in Sioux Falls is responsible for forecasting weather for about the southeastern quarter of South Dakota, as well as a large area of northwest Iowa, including all of KIWA’s primary listening area.
