Transient Who Bilked Sheldon Man Out Of $3000 Faces Prison Time For Felony Theft

Sheldon, Iowa — A transient who bilked a Sheldon man out of $3000 faces up to five years in prison for the crime, among other offenses.

O’Brien County Attorney Micah Schreurs reports that 31-year-old Melissa Margaret Wilken, whose address is unknown, was recently sentenced by the Iowa District Court for O’Brien County for Theft in 2nd Degree, a class D felony. Wilken also was sentenced for Operating a Motor Vehicle without Owner’s Consent, an aggravated misdemeanor.

In addition to being ordered to pay various fines, surcharges, court costs, and victim restitution, Wilken was sentenced to 120 days in jail for her misdemeanor offense and up to five years in prison for her felony offense.

Schreurs says Wilken had befriended a man from Sheldon and was staying at his house. After staying there a few days, he says she stole $3,000 in cash from his home and took his car without his permission. Schreurs says Wilken was eventually located in Spencer, after she went on a spending spree at the Walmart Supercenter.

The Sheldon and Spencer Police Departments assisted in the investigation.
