Twelve-Year-Old Boy Driving Van Causes Accident After Grandfather Allows Him To Drive

Rural Orange City, Iowa — A 12-year-old boy driving a van got into an accident and damaged his grandfather’s van and a Nebraska teen’s car on Tuesday (7/3) near Carnes.
The Iowa State Patrol reports that about 12:25 PM, a 12-year-old boy from Paullina was southbound in the left southbound lane of Highway 60 at Carnes in a 2001 Chevy. Eighteen-year-old Mary Mercier of Nebraska was also southbound on 60, in the right lane, in a 2011 Toyota.
The 12-year-old boy’s grandfather, Paul Van Wechel owns the vehicle and is the front seat passenger.
Both vehicles are approaching the intersection of K64, with the boy ahead of Mercier. As the boy approached the intersection, he attempted to make a right turn onto K64 northbound from the left lane. He turned in front of the Mercier car in the right lane.
The vehicles collided.
The boy was cited for improper turn, and his grandfather was cited for allowing an unauthorized minor to drive.
The grandfather’s van received $2500 damage. Mercier’s Toyota received $5000 damage.
There were no injuries.
