Van Dam Reaches Plea Agreement In Sioux County Cases

Orange City, Iowa — The former Sioux Center teacher charged with 146 counts of child sex-related crimes will not be going to trial in February, as had been scheduled.

According to the Sioux County Attorney’s Office, Curtis Van Dam has reached a plea bargain with prosecutors. Sioux County Attorney Thomas Kunstle says Van Dam will appear in Sioux County District Court in Orange City on Friday, November 30th to change his plea in the case from not guilty to guilty, and receive his sentence.

Kunstle says details of the plea agreement will become public at the time of the November 30th hearing.

The state charges against Van Damn stemmed from an investigation by Sioux Center Police that began in October of last year. The 146 charges against Van Dam stem from incidents that allegedly happened as far back as August, 2013.  Authorities say there were at least 13 victims.

In a separate federal case this June, Van Dam was sentenced to 15-years in federal prison as part of a plea bargain and pled guilty to one count of Sexual Exploitation of a Child.
