Voter Postcards Confuse Some
Date posted - February 28, 2012
You may have received a card in your mail recently about the redrawing of district lines and your voting precinct. We talked to O’Brien County Auditor Barb Rohwer about the cards.
Rohwer says at that point they decided they had two options.
The cards do serve as a nice way to see what voting precinct you’re in, your polling places, congressional district, ward, and so forth.
However, she says that due to the way the cards were written, there is some confusion among voters.
We checked with the other auditors in the four northwestern-most Iowa counties, and they say their situation is very similar. You don’t need to return the card if nothing has changed. It’s okay if you’ve already done it. But since the postage is to be paid by the county, it costs the county money for each card sent in.
Lyon County election clerk Sarah Sprock says they were told by the Secretary of State’s Office that the law requires them to print the cards with that particular wording and to provide an option to return the card even if there are no changes, but she says they were also told that there is nothing in the law that requires the voter to actually return the card if there are no changes.
