Weight Of Snow, Slush Causes Sheldon Storage Building Roof To Collapse

Sheldon, Iowa — This past weekend’s weather caused many postponements and cancellations, but also collapsed the roof of a steel building in northwestern Sheldon.

Barb Rosenboom of Rosenboom Frame and Body says that the weight of accumulated snow and slush caused the roof of a building the company owns to collapse. Rosenboom says the collapse was discovered Sunday morning, and apparently happened sometime Saturday night.

Rosenboom says the building, which was being used to store a boat, camper, and other miscellaneous, is a total loss and will be demolished once they are able to remove the items inside which, she says, appear to have very little damage. She says she thinks they’ll need to raise the rood one section at a time, and remove the items under that section before moving on to the next section.

She blames the roof’s collapse on the weight of the snow that had accumulated on the building’s roof prior to the latest storm, along with the rain that fell and soaked into that snow, adding additional weight, as well as the added weight of the snow that fell Saturday.
