What Appeared To Be A Standoff In Spencer Was A Teen Suicide

Date posted - July 22, 2013

spencerpoliceSpencer, Iowa — Spencer police officers say what appeared to be a standoff at a Spencer home on Sunday wasn’t a standoff at all, and ended with a young man taking his own life.

Spencer Police Chief Mark Lawson reports that officers responded to a call on East Tenth Street in Spencer about 3:45 Sunday afternoon. When they got there, Lawson says they learned a young man was in the basement with a handgun and was very upset. No one else was in the home at the time. Lawson says officers made numerous attempts to contact the young man via loudspeaker and cell phone, but there was no response.

Witnesses say the regional High Risk Entry and Arrest Team was called. Chief Lawson says a robotic camera was deployed, but that too was unsuccessful in making contact with the young man.

Just before 7:20 PM, officers entered the home and found the young man had used the weapon on himself several hours earlier.

The investigation continues.
