Alexis Conaway Named Miss Basketball 2014 by Iowa Newspaper Association

basketballMOC-Floyd Valley standout Alexis Conaway has been named Miss Basketball 2014 by the Iowa Newspaper Association.

Conaway led the Lady Dutch to the Class 3A state championship in a thriller over Unity Christian this past Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena.

Alexis averaged 21.7 points and 8.4 rebounds per game this season. She also led the team with 111 assists, 120 steals and 71 blocked shots.

Her individual highlight at State came when she poured in a single-game tournament record 46 points in the semifinal win over Mediapolis. After the Championship game she was named captain of the 3A all-tournament team after scoring 76 points in three games.

Unity Christian junior Kassidy De Jong was also named to the INA first team in 3A. De Jong was also an all-tournament team selection. During the season she averaged 17.2 points and 6.7 rebounds per game for the state runners-up and was second behind Conaway among 3A players with 60 points in the state tournament.

Junior Jamie Gesink, who led Hull Western Christian to its third consecutive Class 2A state championship, was a first-team pick for the INA 2A squad. Gesink, who averaged 16.3 points and 6.0 rebounds during the regular season, was the leading scorer (19.7) and rebounder (10.0) in the 2A tournament field. Averaging a double – double during the State Tournament. Following the 2A title game she was named the 2A all-tournament team captain.
