Boyden Hull Rock Valley Back in Region Finals

Boyden Iowa — Boyden Hull Rock Valley will host Spirit Lake Monday for the Class 3A Region 1 softball title and a State Tournament berth following a 6-1 semifinal win over Sioux Center on Friday night. Spirit Lake advanced with a 7-2 home win over Cherokee. We’ll bring you the coverage on KIWA AM 1550 and FM 100.7. Pregame begins at 6:45 Monday night with first pitch at 7:00.

The Nighthawks got on the board first as Taylor Richter led off the game with a walk. A Kaitlyn Van Der Zwaag single moved her over to second and an rbi double from Erica Pottebaum brought her home.

Sioux Center tied the score with a run in the second inning. Sydney Gesink doubled to lead off the inning. A balk moved her to third and a wild pitch allowed her to come home and tie the score at 1-1.

Three runs scored on a two out single by Lizzy Blum in the bottom of the fourth. Joanne Luevano opened  the inning with a walk and two outs later Taylor Richter reached on a walk. Blum hit a ball down the third base line that was gloved by the third basemen but she had to throw to first from a sitting position after losing her balance. Blum beat the throw but the ball was in and out of the glove of the first baseman. Jewel Bergstrom running for Luevano scored from third and Richter going on contact with 2 down scored from first on the play. Blum took second and when the throw to second base went into the outfield, Blum rounded second and was sent from third. When the play ended the Nighthawks had scored three runs in the inning and took a 4-1 lead.

Another run scored in the fifth as Keely Swanson led off with a walk and Emma Zoet running for Swanson scored on an rbi single by pinch hitter Charli Bomgaars.

The Nighthawks got another insurance run in the 6th as Blum led off with a single and later scored on an rbi single to left by Keely Swanson to make the final score 6-1 Nighthawks.

Kaitlyn Van Der Zwaag got the complete game win. She gave up 4 hits. She struck out 5 and walked 1. Camryn Cleveringa took the loss giving up 10 hits . She walked 5 and struck out 7.

With the win Boyden Hull Rock  Valley is 31-2 on the year. Sioux Center ends the year at 16-11.
