Boyden Hull Rock Valley knocked off the #4 ranked Spirit Lake Indians 31-8 in non district action at Hafer Field in Spirit Lake.
The Nighthawks jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after forcing an Indians four and out on the Spirit Lake 43. Those three points came when Luis Ronquillo kicked a 37 yard field goal with 7:56 left in the first quarter. On the following kickoff, Ronquillo squib kicked the ball into a Spirit Lake players’ leg. The ricochet was recovered by the Nighthawks at the Boyden Hull Rock Valley 49 yard line. A few plays later Andrew Van Ginkel of Boyden Hull Rock Valley threw a 35 yard touchdown pass to Kirk Prostrollo. With the extra point, the Nighthawks led 10-0 with 6:38 left in the first quarter.
In the second quarter the Nighthawks continued their inspired play when they forced an Indians turnover on a goal line stand inside the 5 yard line. Later in the 2nd quarter the Nighthawks controlled the clock and drove the ball 80 yards in 4 minutes. The scoring play on the drive occurred when a scrambling Andrew Van Ginkel found Jerod Hansen in the back of the end zone for a 5 yard touchdown on 3rd down. The extra point made the score 17-0 with 1:50 left in the first half. After forcing an Indians punt, the Nighthawks took over on the Boyden Hull Rock Valley 1 yard line. Andrew Van Ginkel scored 2 plays later on an electrifying 96 yard touchdown run, aided by a key Omar Mejia block that sprung him free. The Nighthawks led 24-0 at the half.
In the beginning of the second half, the Indians were able to capitalize on a Van Ginkel fumble on the Nighthawks 45 yard line and scored 3:09 later on a one yard quarterback sneak by Alec Henrickson. With the successful two point conversion, Spirit Lake cut the Nighthawks lead to 24-8. However, Boyden Hull Rock Valley would immediately respond on the next play from scrimmage when Andrew Van Ginkel found Riley Francis for a 41 yard touchdown. It was Van Ginkel’s third passing touchdown of the night and 4th overall. The Nighthawks touchdown extended the lead to 31-8, and the game finished with that score.
The Nighthawks improve to 4-1 overall, and 1-1 in the district. and will travel to Sheldon to get back to district play against the Orabs next week. The Indians fall to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the district and will host East Sac County in district play next week.
