Comets And Orabs Split Basketball Doubleheader

basketballThe Sheldon Orabs and Boyden Hull Comets split a Siouxland Conference basketball double header as both teams opened their post holiday schedule at Sheldon Friday night.

Sheldon won the girls game 49-37 while it took double overtime for the Comets to earn a hard fought 54-52 win.

In the girls game Sheldon took a 9-7 lead at the end of the first quarter on a three pointer by Audrey Gustafson as time wound down. They were up 23-20 at halftime. Four three-pointers in the third quarter propelled Sheldon to a 41-30 third quarter lead as they went on to win it 49-37.

Nicole Ewoldt of the Comets led all scorers with 11 points followed by Courtney Schaffer with 10. Krista Bousema led Sheldon with 10 points. A balanced attack had Allie Jongewaard with 8 points while Audrey Gustafson and Abbie Provost added 7 points each.

With the win Sheldon improves to 4-6 in the conference and 4-7 on the year. Boyden Hull stands at 1-8 in the conference and 1-9 for the season.

 

In the boys game the Comets opened a 17-10 first quarter lead and were up 28-20 at halftime. At the end of the third quarter the lead was still at eight points at 36-28. In the fourth quarter Sheldon outscored Boyden Hull 18-10 to send the game into overtime.

In the first overtime Sheldon got buckets from Dallas Ennema and James Gradert to counter 4-of-6 free throw shooting to send it to a second overtime tied at 50-50. In the final overtime all the points belonged to Riley Francis of the Comets as he hit a field goal and went 2-of-2 at the line with time running out to seal the win.

Francis led all scorers with 25 points including four three-pointers and a 7-of-8 performace at the free throw line. JC Koerselman also hit double figures with 13 points.

Sheldon was led by Dallas Ennema with 18 points and James Gradert with 17. Boyden Hull handed Sheldon their first loss of the year as the Orabs stand at 8-1 in the conference and 10-1 for the year. Boyden Hull improves to 7-2 in the Siouxland and 7-2 for the year.

Up next for Sheldon will be a trip to Spencer on Tuesday night for a non conference double header.
