Comets Are State Champions

The Boyden Hull Comets won the Class 1A State Boy’s Basketball title with a 63-45 win over Danville Friday night handing the Bears their only loss of the season. Boyden Hull wraps up a championship season at 26-2. It marked the second game in a row that the Comets faced and defeated an unbeaten opponent at Wells Fargo Arena.

Boyden Hull trailed 16-10 at the end of the first quarter before taking a 30-27 lead into halftime. At the end of the third quarter the outcome was still in doubt at the Comets held a 43-39 lead. A dominating fourth quarter that saw Boyden Hull outscore Danville 20-6 put the game away as the Comets went on to win 63-45.

The Comets had four of the five starters in double figures led by Bryce Moss with a game high 17 points. Brandt Van Roekel and Nathan Alexander were next with 15 each. Taylor Francis hit for 13 in the ballgame.

Danville had two players in double figures led by Steven Soukup with 15 points and Josh Stevens with 10.

As a team Boyden Hull shooting was red hot. The Comets hit 58.3 percent from the field, 50 percent from three-point range and 72 percent from the free throw line.

The Comets also had two players named to the Class 1A All-Tournament Team. Those honors were earned by Brandt Van Roekel and Bryce Moss.
