The Defenders totaled nine first place votes and 99 points in the balloting done by the 11 conference coaches. Northwestern two first place votes and 92 total points. Points were awarded on a 10-1 basis and coaches could not vote for their own team.
Dordt went 17-3 in conference play last season and 30-5 overall to win the school’s first ever men’s basketball title. The Defenders advanced to the NAIA Division II National Tournament and won two games before their season ended in the quarterfinal round of the tournament.
The Red Raiders return four of its top five scorers and seven letter-winners off a 2011-12 team that finished second in the GPAC regular season with a 15-5 record. Northwestern won the postseason title and went on to win its first round game at the NAIA D-II Men’s Basketball National Championship. They lost to Northwest (Wash.) in the second round to finish 26-7 overall.
Dordt returns its top eight scorers from a team that outscored opponents 81-70.1 last season and had Trevor Wolterstorff named to the NAIA Division II second team all-American squad and Cliff Warner was an honorable mention last season.
