Dordt Basketball Signs Byker

Sioux Center, Iowa — Sam Byker, a senior at Unity Christian High School, has announced his intention to attend Dordt College and join the Defender basketball program.

Byker is a 6-1 guard and averaged 8.2 points per game as a junior with 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals per outing. He converted 37 percent of his three-point shots and 95 percent of his free throws. He earned second-team all-conference honors from the War Eagle Conference at the conclusion of the season. As a sophomore Byker scored 3.2 points per game with 1.5 assists.

“We are excited to have Sam join our basketball program and campus community. Having been around sports and Dordt College while growing up, Sam is aware of what it takes to play college basketball. He is a transparent teammate who puts others first and has the knack to make those around him better,” said Dordt College coach Ross Douma. “On the court, Sam possesses a high basketball IQ and the ability to knock down shots behind the arc. We are looking forward to working with Sam the next four years and seeing him develop in many capacities.”

Byker also played football and ran track at Unity. He claimed second-team all-district honors at receiver in 2017 and was an Academic All-District and All-State honoree. He was on two relay teams that qualified for the 2016 Iowa High School State Track and Field Championships.

Sam is the son of Maria and Mike Byker of Orange City, Iowa. He plans to study Accounting at Dordt College.
