Dordt Tops Viterbo In Clash Of Ranked Teams

The Dordt Defender volleyball team earned a 3-1 sweep of the Viterbo VHawks on Tuesday night in Sioux Center.

Viterbo took an early lead in set one and led 19-15 before three straight by the Defenders tied it and an Ema Altena kill gave Dordt its first lead of the set at 20-19.  The match was tied at every stoppage through 29-29 before an Altena kill put Dordt up 30-29 and a block by Altena and Ally Krommendyk gave Dordt the 31-29 win with three straight points to close the set.

Set two featured eight ties with Dordt taking the lead for good on a Krommendyk kill for a 21-20 lead. Dordt scored four of the next five points with Jamie De Jager finishing the set with a kill for the 25-21 win.

The hosts looked poised to sweep the match, taking a 21-18 lead but the visitors tied it at 23-23 and eventually held on to win in come from behind fashion 26-24.

Viterbo used the momentum to get up 5-2 in set four but Dordt rallied to take a 9-8 lead on a Jessi De Jager kill and the Defenders rattled off four points in a row for a 13-9 edge and the lead ballooned to 19-12.  The lead was never less than six as Dordt prevailed 25-15.
