First Round Girl’s Basketball Tournament Games Played in Class 3A And 2A Saturday

basketballThe Sheldon girl’s basketball season came to a close in the Class 3A Region 2 Quarterfinals in Spirit Lake as the Orabs fell to the Indians 78-51.

Spirit Lake opened a 17-11 first quarter lead and went on a second quarter run to surge to a 42-19 halftime lead. The Orabs played them even the rest of the way with the Indians in front 53-34 at the end of the third quarter as they went on to the win.

The 9th ranked Indians got a game high 27 points from KJ Veldman and 21 from Alissa Christoffer. Sheldon put three players in double figures led by senior Audrey Gustafson with 14 points. Krista Bousema hit for 13 and Emily Johnson added 11 points.

 

 

At the free throw line Sheldon went 8-of 10 in the first half followed by an 11-of-15 performance in the second half.

With the loss Sheldon ends the year at 5-17 while Spirit Lake improves to 14-8 for the season and will host Sioux Center in the lower bracket semi final Wednesday night. Sioux Center advanced with a 45-27 win over Unity in Orange City.

The upper bracket semi on Wednesday will match Garner Hayfield a 52-32 home winner over Central Springs against Osage who posted a 60-29 quarterfinal home win over Forest City. The upper bracket semi will be hosted by Osage.

In Class 3A Region 1 the upper bracket semifinal Wednesday will match East Sac County a 66-56 home winner over Greene Country and South Central Calhoun who posted a 69-59 home win over Gilbert. The upper bracket semi will be played at Rockwell City.

In the lower bracket semi its 2nd ranked MOC Floyd Valley a 69-36 winner over Sergeant Bluff Luton hosting Cherokee who posted a 73-63 road win over Odebolt Arthur Battle Creek Ida Grove.

In Class 2A Region 1 play in games Emmetsburg advanced to a Tuesday night upper bracket quarterfinal game against North Union with a 54-41 win over Pocahontas. The other upper bracket quarterfinal will match Sioux Central a 43-31 home winner over Hartley Melvin Sanborn and Okoboji who got the other upper bracket bye. That game will be hosted by the Pioneers.

In the lower bracket Boyden Hull posted a 44-39 road win over Sibley Ocheyedan. They advance to the quarterfinals Tuesday at South O’Brien who got a first round bye. The other lower bracket quarterfinal will see Rock Valley a 60-50 home winner over West Lyon at top ranked Western Christian who got the other lower bracket bye.

Quarterfinals in Class 2A will be played on Tuesday February 12th.
