G-LR Mustangs on To 1A Substate Finals

Sioux Center Iowa — The George Little Rock Mustangs will play for a 1A State Basketball tournament berth on Saturday night. They claimed the District 1 title with a 54-38 win over LeMars Gehlen at the Sioux Center High School Gym Thursday night. They go against South O’Brien who won the District 2 Championship game with a 55-46 win over Newell Fonda Thursday night in Cherokee. The Substate final is set for the MOC Floyd Valley Gym Saturday night with a 7:00 pm scheduled tip off.

The game opened with George Little Rock leading 12-11 at the end of the first quarter. At halftime the lead was up to 29-23. The Mustangs outscored the Jays 12-4 in the third quarter. At the start of the fourth quarter they had taken control 40-27 and would go on to win it 54-38.

G-LR had two players in double figures getting a game high 16 points from Jayden Mauldin and 13 from Lucas Nagel. LeMars Gehlen was led by Cole Wiltgen and Bryan Nohava with 9 points each. With the win the Mustangs are 18-6 on the year while the Jays end the season at 13-10.

Up next for George Little Rock will be a Substate meeting with South O’Brien Saturday night at 7:00 at the MOC Floyd Valley Gym.
