Harmsen to Play at Dordt

Dordt_Defenders logoSioux Center, Iowa — Payton Harmsen, a senior at Western Christian High School in Hull, Iowa, has announced her intention to attend Dordt College and join the women’s basketball program.

Harmsen averaged 8.0 points, made 47 three pointers, had 49 steals and 85 assists during her junior campaign. In 2014-2015, she helped lead her team to a Lakes Conference Championship and a semifinal berth at the class 2A Iowa State Basketball Tournament. She was named 2nd team All-Lakes Conference and was also part of Western’s 2013-2014 Lakes Conference Champions and State Championship team.

Harmsen was also a critical part of the Western Christian state volleyball championship team this fall. A setter, Payton earned first team All- Lakes Conference, All-District, second-team All-State, and was named to the all-tournament team at state. She was also named academic All-Lakes Conference.

“Payton is a great addition to our program for many reasons. She has a high basketball IQ and a great shooter. She knows how to compete hard and understands what it takes to be successful. She knows how to lead her team and serve those around her. We are excited to see her future at Dordt College,” said Dordt College Coach Katie DeWitt-Severson.

Payton is the daughter of Bill and Shawna Harmsen of Rock Rapids, Iowa. Bill coaches girls basketball at Western. She plans to study Pre-Physical Therapy or Education at Dordt College.
