The Class 2A District 1 baseball tournament got underway on Saturday at Sioux Center. In the first game of the day Hartley Melvin Sanborn brought Sheldon’s season to a close with an 11-4 win. in the second game of the night it was Unity Christian ousting South O’Brien 10-6.
In the first game of the day Sheldon took an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Mitch Jensen walked and came in to score on an rbi double by Matt Buenger. Grant Weaver followed with an rbi single to center that plated Buenger.
In the home half of the first inning HMS got on the board as Jordan Japenga tripled and scored on a ball put in play by Casey Dorhout.
A six run second inning by the Hawks broke the game open. Key hits were a two run triple by Dorhout, an rbi double from Dakota Goodvin and rbi singles from Ryan Flynn and Hunter Orthman.
The Hawks put three more on the board in the third innings and another run in the seventh. Clutch hitting was key as HMS scored 6 of their 11 runs with two outs.
Sheldon scored a pair of runs in the top of the fourth as Hunter Mc Donald and Travis Buyert both came in to score.
Ryan Flynn went the distance on the mound for the win. He gave up 5 hits, walked 3 and struck out 10. Mitch Jensen took the loss going the first six and a third innings. He struck out 1 and did not walk a batter.
With the win HMS improves to 7-17 on the year while Sheldon ends the season at 7-14.
In the second game of the night, Unity Christian picked up a 10-6 win over South O’Brien. The Wolverines scored a pair in the top of the first inning as Brett Puhrmann and Sam Weber both came in to score.
Unity took the lead for good with a 4 run first inning. The big blow was a bases loaded single by clean up hitter Aaron Van Wyhe that went to the fence and cleared the bases with Van Wyhe ending up at third. Van Wyhe would later score to make it 4-2 in favor of Unity.
The Knights added four more in the second and single runs in the third and fourth innings.
South O’Brien put a run on the board in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth as they got to within 10-6. The game would be scoreless the rest of the way and Unity Christian would advance to the semi finals on Tuesday.
Cole Vande Vegte went the first four and a third innings for the win. He gave up three hits and struck out 6. Brett Puhrmann went the first two and two thirds innings and was charged with the loss.
With the win Unity improves to 8-22 on the season. South O’Brien ends the year at 11-14.
In the upper bracket the 5pm game on Tuesday will have Unity facing off against Western Christian who got a first round bye. The second game has HMS squaring off against host team Sioux Center who got the lower bracket bye. First pitch is scheduled for 7pm. Both game will be played at Open Space Park in Sioux Center.
