Hunter DeJong Earns International Wrestling Gold and Silver in Argentina

Sibley Iowa  — Hunter DeJong of Little Rock claimed silver in the Greco Roman competition this past Saturday and followed that with a gold medal Sunday in the freestyle competition at the Pan American Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina. DeJong will be a senior on the Sibley Ocheyedan Wrestling Team this winter.

DeJong was part of the U.S. team competing at the 2017 Cadet Pan American Championships July 7th through the 9th. Hunter had earned USAW Cadet Nationals All-American honors and wrestled at 85 kilo grams or 187 pounds.

DeJong took the silver dropping an early match before getting a couple of pins to earn the silver medal in Greco Roman. On Sunday in freestyle he recorded a pair of pins and a technical fall before taking gold with a 10-4 decision over a wrestler from Mexico.

Hunter qualified for the Pan-Am event as the only wrestler at his weight class to place in both Greco and Freestyle at the UWW Cadet National Championships held earlier this year at Akron Ohio.

Up next this summer will be Fargo camp. Hunter DeJong is a returning double All-American at the Fargo North Dakota meet where he finished fourth in Greco-Roman a year ago and seventh in freestyle as a cadet. In his junior year of high school he finished 4th at the State Meet at 195 pounds in the individual competition at Wells Fargo Arena. As a team the Generals finished third at the State Dual Team Tournament in Class 1A this past season.
