Johnson Votes Against Requiring Deer Stand Tags

Date posted - March 2, 2012

A bill requiring all deer stands and blinds in Iowa to display an ownership tag passed along party lines, 26-24, in the Iowa Senate this week. Senate File 2113 is intended to stop people from placing unauthorized structures on property and attempts to address poaching in Iowa.

State Sen. David Johnson (R-Ocheyedan) opposed the bill, saying it raises more questions than answers.

The legislation states that every deer hunter in the state who builds or owns a deer stand or blind would be required to affix a weather-resistant tag of identification which plainly shows the name, hunting license number, and address of the owner of the stand.

Violators would be subject to a $20 fine.

“This bill may be well-intentioned, but it has some major identity-protection issues, Johnson said. There are some bad apples out there that will look at this as a perfect opportunity to gather hunter information in attempts to harass hunters, use license information for identity theft purposes or even possibly lead to the theft of legally owned firearms. Hunters who do ask permission from a landowner to hunt and respect private property rights would be penalized.”

The bill has an uncertain future in the Iowa House, he said.
