Late Home Run Lifts Western to Victory

Western Christian 2Sheldon, Iowa — A 3-run home run in the 7th inning by Caden Fenchel lifted the Western Christian Wolfpack to victory 8-7 in tournament baseball Saturday night.

Western Christian would get on the board in the top of the 1st. Justin Grevengoed would double to center field and would come in to score after Tyson Kooima doubled to left field. Kooima would then cross home plate on a sacrifice fly by Colyn Oostenink to give the Wolfpack an early 2-0 lead. Sheldon would respond with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first. Brandon Winkel would reach on a base on balls, and would be driven in on a Cody Van Meeteren single to left. Ross Van Kley singled to short, and would tie things up after Travis Sterler doubled to center field.

Western Christian would add three more runs in the top of the 2nd. Carter Broek would get on base on a fielder’s choice, and would come in to score off of a Grevengoed double to left. Grevengoed would come in to score off of an error, and Fenchel would drive in Kooima with a double to left-center. After 2 innings it was 5-2 Western.

Sheldon would get back on the board in the 5th inning, scoring two runs. Winkel would single to left, and Van Kley would reach on an error. Both came into score on an error. The Orabs would take the lead with a 3-run sixth. Colby Kleinhesselink would reach after being hit by a pitch. He would come in to score after Van Kley singled to right field. Winkel would reach on a single to left field. Winkel would score on a past ball, and Ross Van Kley would find home plate after a Cody Van Meeteren double to left-center. Sheldon would lead 7-5.

In the top of the 7th, Grevengoed doubled to left field and Tyson Kooima singled to short. Caden Fenchel would then hit a 3-run home run over the left field wall to give the Wolfpack an 8-7 lead and Western would come away with the win.

Tyson Kooima got the win for Western. Kooima went 1 2/3 innings, giving up 1 earned run on 2 hits and a walk while striking out 4.

Colby Kleinhesselink took the loss for the Orabs. Kleinhesselink went 6 1/3 innings pitched. He gave up 7 earned runs on 2 walks and 8 hits, and struck out 7.

With the win Western improves to 8-17 on the year and will play West Lyon Tuesday night at 5:00 pm at Hinton in the Class 2A District 1 Semifinal
