Storm Lake (including Little Storm Lake)

The lake is completely open.  Fishing is starting to pick up and now is traditionally a good time to catch catfish. Special walleye regulations at Storm Lake are three walleye per day, all fish between 17 and 22 inches must be released, and only one walleye over 22 inches may be kept.  White Bass – Fair: Anglers are catching a few white bass in theStormLakemarina using a twister and minnow under a bobber.  Walleye – Fair: Anglers are catching a few walleye in theStormLakemarina in the southwest corner of the lake.  Try using a twister and minnow with a bobber.

Big Spirit Lake

Walleye season is closed. Ice is rapidly deteriorating and there is a large open area out from Big Stoney Point. A few people are venturing out in search of perch.

 West Okoboji Lake

Use caution – landings are opening up and the ice is rapidly declining.  A few people are venturing out in search of panfish in the bays.  Bluegill – Fair: Bluegill action has been fair with most of the fish being caught in Emerson and Millers bays, and the north end of the lake.  Use small jigs and light line for best results.  

 The ice is rapidly deteriorating and with forecasted highs in the 70s use caution if venturing out.  The smaller lakes in the area are opening up rapidly with a few boat ramps ice free includingCenterLakeandLostIsland. 

 East Okoboji Lake

We have received no information regarding fishing on this water body this week.  Channel Catfish – No Report: Catfish action should improve as the water begins to warm try using cut bait near deeper wintering holes.

Silver Lake (Dickinson)

We have received no information regarding fishing on this water body this week.  Channel Catfish – No Report: Using cut bait after dark should produce a few fish as the water starts to warm.   Walleye – No Report: Try using slow presentations suck as a jig and minnow or slip bobber for ice out walleyes.  Fishing after dark with minnow baits, twister tails, and jig and minnow may also produce some fish

 Lost Island Lake

The lake was 90 percent open as of 3/13 and should be fully open by the weekend.    Channel Catfish – No Report: Cut bait should produce a few cats during low light periods and after dark.  Walleye – No Report: As the water warms walleye action should improve try using a slow presentation such as a jig and minnow or minnow baits during low light periods or after dark.

 Ice conditions are unsafe with many areas rapidly opening up.  Time to dust off the open water gear. Target shallow areas with a dark bottom for ice out crappie and pike action.  For more information on fishing in northwestIowa, call theSpiritLakehatchery at 712-336-1840.
