MOC Floyd Valley will go to the Iowa State Boys Basketball Tournament for a second year in a row as they claimed a 70-61 substate win Monday night over Sioux City Heelan. The 20-4 Dutch will open tournament play as the number five seed on Tuesday at 2pm when they meet 20-4 Grinnell who was named the number four seed. Opening tip will be at 2pm on Tuesday March 5th.
The Dutch opened an 11-6 first quarter lead and went up 28-26 as freshman Levi Jansen hit a three pointer as time expired. At the end of three the lead was up to 47-36 as MOC Floyd Valley would go on to win 70-61 by putting the game away at the free throw line.
After the game Head Coach Loren DeJong had these thoughts about a return to State…..
The coach was also quick to recognize his assistant coaches……
the Dutch put four players in double figures as Trey Achterhoff led the way with 18. Parker Mulder hit for 11 including 8 in the fourth quarter. Justin Van Kalsbeek and David De Haan hit for 10 points each.
Unselfish play is the key to MOC Floyd Valley’s success. Coach De Jong was quick to agree…..
The Crusaders had three players in double figures with Shane Graves knocking down a game high 19 with 10 of those coming in the fourth quarter. Kyle Heaton and Trent Solsma had 13 points each.
We asked De Jong about preparations for State………
With the win MOC Floyd Valley improves to 20-4 on the year. Sioux City Heelan ends the year at 16-8.
