Nighthawks Advance After Beating The Cowboys

The #1 ranked Boyden Hull Rock Valley Nighthawks topped the Clarion Goldfield Cowboys 42-14 in Hull on Wednesday night in first round playoff action.

The Nighthawks scored first after forcing a Cowboy punt. Running back Miguel Alvarado finished a 2:43 64 yard drive with a 2 yard touchdown run. After the successful extra point, the Nighthawks had a 7-0 lead with 6:11 left in the first quarter.

After another stalled Cowboy drive, Brandt Van Roekel returned the punt 74 yards for the score. The punt was a low line drive that Van Roekel was able to catch full stride to get through the first line of defense. With 2:35 left in the first quarter it was 14-0 in favor of the Nighthawks.

Boyden Hull Rock Valley added two more scores in the second quarter to extend the lead. They capitalized on a 50 yard drive in the beginning of the second quarter, capped off by another Miguel Alvarado touchdown run. The Alvarado score made it 21-0 with 10:49 left in the half.

The Cowboys tried to answer on the following drive taking the ball down to the Nighthawk 4 yard line. With first and goal to go, the Nighthawks were able to complete the goal line stand creating a turnover on downs. Boyden Hull Rock Valley than gained possession and drove it 96 yards scoring on a 1 yard Miguel Alvarado run. At the half the score was 28-0 in favor of the Nighthawks.

The Nighthawks took the opening drive of the 2nd half 60 yards in just 1:15 to make the score 35-0. The scoring play on the drive was a 49 yard touchdown pass from Van Roekel to JC Koerselman.

Clarion Goldfield was able to get on the board on the next drive when Adam Stevens threw a 26 yard touchdown pass. His pass finished off a 64 yard drive that took 4:31 off of the game clock. With 5:56 left in the third quarter, the Nighthawks lead was cut to 35-7.

In the beginning of the fourth quarter, Van Roekel put the game away with his second punt return for a touchdown. This time Van Roekel returned the ball 30 yards for the score. After the successful extra point, the Nighthawks were up 49-7 with 6:29 to play.

The Cowboys were able to add 7 points at the end of the game on a 17 yard touchdown run by freshman Zach Pogge with a 1:48 left. The Nighthawks ran down the clock and finished with a 49-14 victory.

Next week Monday the Nighthawks (10-0, 6-0 in District) will host Garner Hayfield/Ventura in Rock Valley in the second round of the playoffs. Garner Hayfield/Ventura was victorious 30-6 against Central Lyon George Little Rock in their first round game.
