Boyden Hull Rock Valley Nighthawks advanced in the class 2A playoffs by beating the Garner Hayfield Ventura Cardinals 34-13 in the round one contest at Hulst field in Rock Valley.
The Nighthawks opened up a 13-0 lead in the first half despite losing the time of possession battle dramatically. The Nighthawks scored first on an 80 yard touchdown run by Jerod Hansen. The one play drive gave the Nighthawks a 6-0 lead with 1:27 left in the first quarter.
The Nighthawks than added 7 more points when Omar Mejia scored the first of his two touchdowns on the night with a 58 yard touchdown run. The run finished off a 90 yard drive in just 1:23. The Nighthawks led 13-0 at the half.
Garner Hayfield Ventura took the second half kickoff and committed the games first turnover when Braden Meints fumbled the first play from scrimmage on the Cardinals own 22 yard line. Omar Mejia for the Nighthawks scored on the next play when he ran the ball in from 22 yards out. The Nighthawks led 20-0 with 11:47 left in the 3rd quarter.
The Cardinals got on the board on the next possession. Garner Hayfield Ventura drove the ball 79 yards in 8:03. Braden Meints scored on a 5 yard run to finish off the drive and the Nighthawks lead was 20-7 with 3:38 left in the third quarter.
The 13 point lead was shortlived as the Nighthawks answered on the next possession, driving the ball 92 yards in 2:10. Andrew Van Ginkel scored on that drive with a 56 yard touchdown run, Van Ginkel’s run extended the Nighthawks lead 27-7 with 1:21. Andrew Van Ginkel added another score in the middle of the fourth quarter, this time throwing a 30 yard touchdown pass to Jerod Hansen. The throw finished off a 68 yard drive in 2:33 for the Nighthawks.
With the score 34-7 Garner Hayfield Ventura scored late in the 4th when Spencer Shaw punched the ball in with a 1 yard quarterback sneak. His run capped a 68 yard drive in 5:56. The Nighthawks finished with the 34-13 victory.
The Cardinals ended the season with an overall record of 7-3, 4-2 in the district. The Nighthawks improve to 9-1, 5-1 in the district. Boyden Hull Rock Valley will face the Spirit Lake Indians in Spirit Lake Monday at 7PM.
