Nighthawks Come Up Short Against Sioux Center

For the third straight year the Nighthawks are eliminated in the quarterfinal round.  This time the Nighthawks lose 48-24 against the Sioux Center Warriors at Open Space Park in Sioux Center.

The first quarter was controlled by the Warriors rushing attack as the first drive went 69 yards, all on the ground, and ate 3:56 off the game clock.  Christian Rozeboom scored on a 5 yard run.  After forcing a Nighthawk’s three and out, the Warriors scored once again on a 68 yard drive.  Quarterback Andrew O’Donnell threw a 4th and goal 10 yard pass to Christian Rozeboom to increase the lead to 14-0 with 1:11 left in the first quarter.

The Nighthawks answered on the following drive when Andrew Van Ginkel ran the ball from 11 yards out for the score.  The 64 yard drive took 1:36 off the clock.  The missed extra point made the score 14-6 with 11:29 left in the second quarter.  Sioux Center quickly answered on the next drive. It took 3 run plays and only 21 seconds off the clock to drive the ball 80 yards.  The scoring play was a Torin Huisman 12 yard run.  The successful extra point made the score 21-6 with 11:03 left in the half.

Boyden Hull Rock Valley scored to bring the halftime deficit to only nine points.  The Nighthawks forced a Warriors punt and took over on the Sioux Center 33 yard line.  Boyden Hull Rock Valley scored 31 seconds later on a 15 yard touchdown pass from Van Ginkel to Kirk Prostrollo.  The missed two point attempt made the score 21-12 going into halftime.

The third quarter saw the Nighthawks miss some opportunities and the Warriors extend the lead.  Sioux Center drove the ball 80 yards late in the third in 2:07 and scored on a 3 yard Torin Huisman run.  The score was 28-12 with 45 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Warriors finished off the game by scoring three more touchdowns, this outpaced the two scores by the Nighthawks.  Sioux Center scored first in the 4th quarter when Torin Huisman scored on a 37 yard touchdown run.  The Nighthawks followed that up with a 68 yard scoring drive in 1:13.  Omar Mejia finished that drive when he scored on a 2 yard run, making the score 35-18 with 5:08 left in the 4th quarter.  Than the Warriors scored when Christian Rozeboom scored on a 5 yard run after recovering the onside. The 44 yard drive lasted 1:18.  The Nighthawks answered with a 65 yard drive of their own when Mejia punched the ball in from 3 yards out.  The scoring for the game was finished with Christian Rozeboom scored on a 44 yard onside kick return touchdown with 1:18 left in the game.  The final score was 48-24.

Sioux Center advances to play Carroll Kuemper Catholic in the UNI Dome and improves to 10-2 on the year.  The Nighthawks finished 10-2 on the season.
