Nighthawks Down Orabs in Softball Tournament Opener

nighthawk logoBoyden Hull Rock Valley topped Sheldon 6-0 in the opening round of the 3A Region 1 tournament. With the win the Nighthawks move on to the Friday semi finals against Sioux Center who turned back Spirit Lake 5-2 in the other lower bracket quarterfinal.

The Nighthawks plated 3 runs in the first inning as Nicole Ewoldt, Kensy Vande Hoef and Monserrat Figueroa Came in to score.

The Nighthawks scored three more in the bottom of the second as Sam Blum reached on a bunt single and later scored from third. Figueroa drove in the other two with a line drive homer to straight away center field. Vande Hoef who had reached on a bunt also came in to score as Boyden Hull Rock Valley took a 6-0 lead.

After that it become a pitchers dual with both teams playing strong defense. Joanna Heemstra earned the win going the first six innings. She gave up 3 hits walked 1 and struck out 6. CJ Vander Zwaag pitched a perfect seventh striking out two.

Allie Jongewaard took the loss giving up 3 hits. She walked 3, struck out one and did not give up a hit or run after the second inning.

With the win Boyden Hull Rock Valley improves to 21-3 on the year and will defend the home field again on Friday when they host Sioux Center in the lower bracket semi final.

In the upper bracket Garner Hayfield Ventura defeated Forest City 6-1 and will meet Estherville Lincoln Central a 13-0 winner over Algona in the upper bracket semi final Friday night in Estherville.

Sheldon ends the season at 13-14.
