Nighthawks Fall In Softball Region Final

Boyden, Iowa — The #8 Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley Nighthawks fell to the #13 Spirit Lake Indians in the Class 3A Region 1 Final in Boyden Monday night.

A pitchers duel and stout defenses were featured in the opening innings of the contest with neither team giving up much in the opening innings.

Both teams were able to cross home plate in the fourth inning. Hannah Poolman scored on a Jordyn Hamm fielders choice, and Emily Alger laid down the sacrifice bunt to drive in Izzy Backhaus to give Spirit Lake a 2-0 lead. Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley responded when Brooke Zylstra went yard to center field. After four innings of play it was 2-1 in favor of the Indians.

Spirit Lake then added another run in the top of the 5th to take a 3-1 lead, but in the bottom of the 6th Zylstra shot another one over the wall to pull the Nighthawks to within 3-2, but it wouldn’t be enough and Spirit Lake came away with the victory.

Kelsey Kannenberg got the win for the Indians. Giving up 2 earned on 9 hits in seven innings of work. She walked 3 and struck out 4.

Kaitlyn Van Der Zwaag took the loss for the Nighthawks. Van Der Zwaag gave up 4 hits, walked 2, and struck out 6

Spirit Lake improves to 28-7 on the year. Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley ends their season at 31-3.
