Nighthawks Impress In Win Over The Indians

Date posted - September 21, 2012

The #2 ranked Boyden Hull Rock Valley Nighthawks beat the #4 ranked Spirit Lake Indians 25-10 in a non district battle at Hesla Field in Hull Friday night.

The game started off rocky for the Boyden Hull Rock Valley Nighthawks, as the Indians defense was able to force two interceptions in the first three possessions. The second of those interceptions by Cody Poock of the Indians gave Spirit Lake the first score of the game with a 37 yard field goal by Brett Cochran Bray putting the Indians up 3-0 with 1:34 left in the first quarter.

After a few more changes of possession, Boyden Hull Rock Valley was able to answer with a 43 yard drive that took 1:19 off of the second quarter clock. On the scoring play Brandt Van Roekel fumbled the shotgun snap, rolled out to his left, froze the defense, and found Jerod Hansen in the end zone on a 29 yard TD pass. With the extra point the score was 7-3 with 8:16 left in the second quarter.

Spirit Lake took back the lead on the next drive when the Indians drove the ball 70 yards in 3:13. The drive featured a wildcat package in the red zone with Cody Poock punching in the touchdown to make the score 10-7 in favor of the Indians.

The pivotal play in the game was late in the first half with the score still 10-7 in favor of the Indians. Brandt Van Roekel ran in an 86 yard bootleg touchdown making the score 13-10 just before half. Up until that point in the drive the Nighthawks actually backed up 3 yards before the scoring play.

With that big play coming in right before half the Nighthawks were able to add to the lead and shut down the Indian offense starting in the 2nd half. Brandt Van Roekel and Dallas Rozeboom both added touchdowns runs of 2 and 5 yards to make the final score 25-10.

The Nighthawks defense stepped it up in the 2nd half only allowing a missed field goal attempt, an interception (that lead to the Van Roekel score), and 3 punts.

Next week the #2 ranked Nighthawks (5-0, 2-0 in District) will face Sheldon in Rock Valley. Spirit Lake (4-1, 2-0 in District) will play at East Sac County.
