Nighthawks to Play For 3A Region 1 Softball Championship

nighthawk logoBoyden Hull Rock Valley advanced to the Class 3A Region 1 Championship game with a 6-0 win over Sioux Center in the lower bracket semifinal Friday night in Boyden.

With the win the Nighthawks advance to Monday night’s title game where they will face Estherville Lincoln Central. The Midgets eliminated Garner Hayfield Ventura 7-1 Friday night in Estherville. The Region Championship Game will be decided in Sheldon with the first pitch set for 7pm.

The Nighthawks scored a pair of runs in the third inning as Sam Blum singled to right with one out. Nicole Ewoldt followed and reached on an error. Both would score on a single to left by Monserrat Figueroa.

Two more runs came across in the fifth as Blum led off the inning with a single to right and later scored along with Ewoldt who had reached on an error.

The Nighthawks closed out the scoring in the top of the seventh as Blum led off with a bunt single and would later score as Kensy Vande Hoef reached on an error. Vande Hoef scored on an rbi double to the corner in right off the bat of pinch hitter Cassie Van Beek.

Joanna Heemstra got the win going the first six innings. She gave up 2 hits, walked 3 and struck out 6. CJ Vander Zwaag came on in the seventh to close it out.

Megan Cleveringa went the distance for Sioux Center. She gave up 3 earned runs on 6 hits. She struck out 7 and did not walk a batter.

With the win Boyden Hull Rock Valley improves to 22-3 on the year while Sioux Center finishes at 20-11 on the season. The two Siouxland Conference foes had split their conference series with each team posting a win at home during the regular season.
