Nighthawks Win Tough Game Against Lions


The #6 ranked Boyden Hull Rock Valley Nighthawks beat the Central Lyon George Little Rock Lions 28-15 in Hull on Friday Night.

Central Lyon George Little Rock started the game with a 6:43 drive that covered 65 yards.  The Lions scored on a 12 yard quarterback keeper by Pete Menage on 4th down.  The Lions added a two point conversion making the score 8-0 with 5:17 left in the first quarter.

The Nighthawks were able to take advantage of a Pete Menage missed pitch later in the first quarter and scored in the second quarter during a 27 yard drive that lasted 1:49.  Starting tailback Omar Mejia finished the drive with a 14 yard touchdown run.  The Nighthawks missed the two point conversion. Andrew Van Ginkel almost single handedly added another touchdown when he intercepted a Pete Menage pass, than finished off the resulting 38 yard drive with a 37 yard scramble for the score.  He than threw a successful two point conversion to Jerod Hansen and the score was 14-8 in favor of the Nighthawks with 6:34 left in the second quarter.  The Nighthawks added more after forcing a Lions punt. Boyden Hull Rock Valley’s Van Ginkel struck again, this time throwing a 44 yard touchdown pass to Jerod Hansen, with the successful extra point the score was 21–8 with 2:54 left in the second quarter.

The Lions would answer on the following drive in just 1:06.  The Lions ran the ball almost exclusively on the 65 yard drive and scored on a 16 yard touchdown run by CJ Roths.  The score at the half was 21-15 in favor of the Nighthawks.

The Nighthawks took the first possession of the second half 80 yards for the score.  The drive lasted 1:39 and was finished off by an Omar Mejia 13 yard touchdown run, his second of the game.  At the 10:21 mark in the third quarter the score was 28-15.

The last gasp for Central Lyon George Little Rock would come up short with less than four minutes left in the game.  The Lions were driving the ball and arrived inside the Nighthawks 10 yard line before stalling out and turning the ball over on downs with 3:52 left in the contest.

The final score of the game was 28-15, and the win put the district 1 pieces into place.  Central Lyon George Little Rock fell to 3rd in the district with their second loss.  Boyden Hull Rock Valley gains second place behind Sioux Center (the district champion).  MOC-FV with the win against Sheldon last week gets the #4 spot in district 1.

In first round playoff action on Wednesday the Nighthawks (8-1, 5-1 in District) will face Garner Hayfield/Ventura in Rock Valley. The Lions (6-3, 4-2 in District) will have an away game versus South Central Calhoun.
