Northwestern Basketball Programs add Assistant Coaches

northwestern college 1Orange City Iowa — The Northwestern College Men’s Basketball Program has hired two former Red Raiders to serve on the coaching staff. Red Raider head coach Kris Korver has announced the hiring of Mike Vorwald as a varsity assistant coach and Ben Miller as the junior varsity coach. Vorwald will also work with the Sports Information Department.

Vorwald played the point guard position for the Red Raiders from 2010-12. Vorwald was a part of two Raider teams that earned NAIA Division II National Tournament bids. He completed his degree from the University of Sioux Falls in 2014 and has taught 3rd grade and coached baseball and basketball back in his hometown in Worthington, Minn.

Miller was a standout point forward for the Red Raiders from 2010-13. He helped lead the Red Raiders to three NAIA Division II National Tournaments, two GPAC regular season championships and one GPAC tournament championship. Miller has worked with the family business in Volga, S.D. and coached at Sioux Valley High School the last three years. Coach Rick Clark will continue his duties as an assistant coach and Ryan Christy will serve as a student coach.

Northwestern College also announced the addition of Kristen Lee as an assistant for the women’s basketball program. She will also serve as an admissions counselor.
A native of Dawson, Minn., Lee joins the Red Raiders staff after a two-year stint as a graduate assistant at Southwest Minnesota State University. Lee also served as a coach with the Minnesota Fury, a standout AAU program.

Northwestern College and head coach Chris Yaw also named Gary Richardson as an assistant within the program. Richardson, a long-time coach at the high school level, most recently served as the head girls’ basketball coach at MOC-Floyd Valley High School where he guided the Dutch to the 3A state championship in 2014.
