Okoboji Upsets HMS as Boy’s Tournament Basketball Gets Underway

basketballThe Okoboji Pioneers took the lead with less than two minutes to go in the ballgame and held on to win 58-55 over Hartley Melvin Sanborn Monday night. It was a lower bracket Class 2A District 2 quarterfinal game played at the HMS Gym.

HMS opened with a 13-9 first quarter lead and was up 24-20 at halftime. At the end of the third quarter the lead was down to 37-36 with the Pioneers overtaking the Hawks for the win. Blake Simons scored 22 of the Hawks 24 first quarter points as he poured in 26 on the night. Brett Waechter added 8 points.

Dalton Syverson tied for game high honors as he hit for 26 points for Okoboji. He had 11 at halftime with 15 coming in the second half including 11 in the fourth quarter alone. He was joined in double figures by Weston Burgeson with 14 and Alex Heller who pumped in 10.

With the win Okoboji improves to 5-17 while HMS finishes the season at 8-14. Okoboji moves on to the lower bracket semifinals Thursday where they will travel to Spirit Lake. The Indians advanced with a 47-30 home win over North Union.

In Class 2A District 1 Unity posted a 71-31 home win over Ridge View. The Knights advance to the upper bracket semifinal at the Western Christian Gym Thursday night. The Wolfpack got a first round bye.

In the lower bracket of District 1 Sioux Center posted a 96-61 home win over Cherokee. The Warriors will be at South O’Brien for Thursday’s lower bracket semifinal as South O’Brien received a first round bye.

In Class 1A there were a few play in games to set up the quarterfinals. In the upper bracket West Sioux won a 49-31 home game over Akron Westfield. They will be at Boyden Hull for Thursday’s quarterfinals. The Comets got the upper bracket bye into the quarterfinals.

In the lower bracket it’s Spalding who won 65-60 at home against Remsen St Mary’s. The Spartans will be at LeMars Gehlen as Gehlen got the lower bracket bye into the quarterfinals.

There was only one play in game District 1 of 1A. In that one Sibley Ocheyedan won a 63-31 home contest against Clay Central Everly. They will be at Harris Lake Park Thursday for the quarterfinals as the Wolves got the only bye in District 1.
