Orab Boys Golf Team gets Fire Truck Send off to State

Orab Firetruck SendoffSheldon Iowa — The Sheldon Orab boys golf Team got a fire truck send off Thursday morning as they left town for the Class 2A State Golf Meet set for Friday and Saturday at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge.

Sheldon added the District title Friday May 20th to their acomplishments that already included the Sectional and Conference titles. The Orabs earned their District title at Emerald Hills by the narrowest of margins with a series of tie breakers coming into play.

Sheldon shot a 337 and Fort Dodge St. Edmonds’s also shot a 337. The first tie breaker goes to the 5th place golfer on each team, and that was a tie as well, so it went to the 6th golfer on the team and that’s where Sheldon got the edge to win the District and qualify for a berth in the 2016 State 2A Boys Golf Tournament.

Orab head coach Gene Bomgaars said afterwards, “we have stressed how important every player is, every hole is and every shot this post season and boy did that come to be true today. The fun part of today is that we used every single player’s score as it went down to the 6th player”. Orab team members include Tyler Merley, Koby Klatt, Phil Cain, Dominic Seivert, Nick Bomgaars and Devon Johnson.

Unity Christians Jaren Brue also moved on to State as an individual. He won a two hole playoff to advance. Brue, Charlie Wych of Cherokee, Ryan Yates of Hinton and Cade Broek of Western Christian had all finished 72 holes at 82.

The Class 1A meet is set for American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown Friday and Saturday. Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn qualified as a team in District play Friday the 20th at Spencer. Team members include Cayle Carney, Jordan Japenga, Norman Schirmer, David Conway, Ethan Wright and DJ Lode.

The Class 3A meet will be contested Friday and Saturday at the Spring Valley Course at Livermore. At the District at Dennison Friday the 20th MOC Floyd Valley qualified as a team. Team members include Tate Arends, Trenton DeHaan, Riley Frederes,
