The Sheldon Orab girl’s basketball team opened up the Class 3A Region 1 Tournament with a 59-58 win over Sioux Center on the Warriors home floor Saturday night. Up next will be a semifinal matchup against Unity Christian at the Unity Gym on Wednesday night. Unity advanced with a 75-35 home win over Cherokee.
A Madison Beaver free throw had given the Warriors a 58-57 lead late in the fourth quarter. The Orabs called time with just over 10 seconds to play when they crossed the time line to set up the final play. The ball would end up in the hands of Emily Johnson who powered a shot up in the paint for the game winner with 3.1 seconds left to play.
At the end of the first half Sioux Center was up 19-6. At halftime the Orabs had trimmed the lead to 37-29. At the end of the third quarter the lead was down to seven at 48-41. With six minutes to go in the fourth quarter Sheldon had finally gotten back to even and a short time later took their first lead of the game. It was back and forth basketball for the rest of the fourth quarter with Sheldon eventually getting the win 59-58.
Emily Johnson led all scorers with 20 points with nine of those coming in the fourth quarter. Sami Kleinwolterink hit for 15 including a 6-of-6 performance at the line in the fourth quarter. Mackensey Radke hit for 10 points including a pair of threes and 2-of-2 free throw shooting as the Orabs closed the gap in the third quarter.
Sioux Center put three players in double figures led by 18 from Jill Vander Plaats who fouled out with 3:18 to play. Mariah Hulstein dropped in 14 with Madison Beaver pumping in a dozen.
With the win Sheldon improves to 13-9 on the year while Sioux Center wraps up at 12-10.
The lower bracket semi will match Spirit Lake and Humboldt. Spirit Lake advanced with a 58-27 home win over Estherville Lincoln Central. Humboldt posted a 39-36 home win over Forest City on Saturday night.
In Class 3A Region 2 top ranked MOC Floyd Valley won a 71-38 home game over Odebolt Arthur Battle Creek Ida Grove. The Lady Dutch will host Sergeant Bluff Luton Wednesday night. SBL won a 58-40 home contest against East Sac County.
