Orabs And Lions Split Basketball Doubleheader

basketballSheldon and Central Lyon split a basketball doubleheader at Rock Rapids Tuesday night. In the girl’s game Central Lyon posted a 66-48 win in the regular season finale for both teams. The boy’s game went to Sheldon 59-45 as both teams have one more regular season game left.

In the girls game the Lions led 20-11 at the end of the first quarter and pushed that to a 42-19 half time advantage as they went on to win their 20th game of the season. Lexi Ackerman had a game high 19 points. She was joined in double figures by Kelsey Ackerman and Kori Schulte who both hit for 10 points.

Sheldon had two players in double figures getting 12 points each from Krista Bousema and Abby Provost.

With the win Central Lyon ranked number two in the latest 1A poll finishes the regular season at 16-2 in the conference and 20-2 on the year. Sheldon wraps up the regular season at 5-13 in the conference and 5-16 for the season.

Sheldon opens Class 3A Region 2 Tournament play Saturday with a trip to 8th ranked Spirit Lake. Central Lyon got a bye into the quarterfinals of Class 1A Region 1 and will open tournament play Tuesday February 12th at home against the winner of this Thursday’s play in game between Trinity and Harris Lake Park being played in Lake Park.
In the boys game Sheldon opened a 13-10 first quarter lead behind a 9 point effort from James Gradert and surged to a 35-17 first half lead behind a 17 point effort from Dallas Ennema who scored 13 in the second quarter. At the end of three Ennema hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer and the lead was up to 50-34. Sheldon went on to win 59-45.

Ennema ended up with a game high 23 points and was joined in double figures by Gradert who ended up with 15 including 5-of-5 free throw shooting on the night. Central Lyon was led by Nic Lutmer who fouled out late in the game with 15 points. Also in double figures was Kalen Eckenrod with 11.

With the win Sheldon improves to 15-2 in the conference and 19-2 for the season. Central Lyon stands at 6-11 in the conference and 10-11 for the year. Sheldon ends the regular season at Boyden Hull Friday while the Lions play host to Rock Valley.
