Orabs And Rockets Split Siouxland Conference Basketball Doublheader

Sheldon and Rock Valley split a Siouxland Conference basketball doubleheader Friday night at Sheldon. The girl’s game went to Rock Valley 43-39. The boys game went to Sheldon 53-32.

In the girls game Sheldon led at the first three breaks 13-12 at the end of the first quarter, 23-16 at the half and 27-24 at the end of the third. In the fourth quarter the Rockets took the lead and were able to take the win outscoring Sheldon 19-12.

Rock Valley put three of their five starters in double figures getting a game high 14 points from Joanna Heemstra and 11 points each from Kensy Vande Hoff and Monserrat Figueroa.

The Orange were led by Krista Bousema with 9 points followed by Audrey Gustafson with 8.

With the win Rock Valley stands at 2-3 in both the conference and the season. Sheldon falls to 2-3 in the conference and 2-4 on the year.
In the boys game Rock Valley led 13-9 at the end of the first quarter before Sheldon took the lead and a 22-16 halftime lead. The Orabs outscored the Rockets 15-5 in the third quarter as they led 37-21 at the end of three before going on to win 53-32.

Sheldon got a game high 18 points from Chris Balster as he drove the basket for points and took advantage of fouls to score from the line. Balster finished with 4 two-point field goals and an 8-of-11 performance from the line. James Gradert joined him in double figures with 14 points on the night.

Rock Valley was led by Jesse Vande Weerd with a 10 point effort. Scott Westra was next with 8 points before fouling out with 4:07 to play in the ball game.

With the win the Orabs remain unbeaten on the year with a 4-0 conference mark and 6-0 season record. The Rockets stand at 1-4 in both the conference and for the season.

Up next for the Orabs will be a home doubleheader with MOC Floyd Valley on Tuesday night. We’ll bring you the broadcast on KIWA FM 105.3.
