Orabs Close Season With 40-18 Win

Orab-LogoThe Sheldon Orabs closed out the football season with a 40-18 non district win over the Hartley Melvin Sanborn Hawks at Hartley Friday night.

The Hawks scored first following a fumble recovery at the Sheldon 39 yard line. Evan Metzler found Nathan Westphal for a 35 yard score. The extra point was no good and the Hawks were up 6-0 with 2:40 left in the first quarter.

Sheldon put 21 points on the board with just over three minutes left in the half turning a pair of fumbles and an interception into points.

Following a fumble recovery on their own 24 Sheldon went 76 yards with Colby Kleinhesselink scoring on a 6 yard run. Trevor Mayer added the extra point to give the Orabs a 7-6 lead with 3:02 left in the half.

Sheldon forced a fumble and recovered on the HMS 23 yard line. Kleinhesselink found Garret Lang for a 23 yard score as Lang scored on a dual possession play as Jordan Japenga went for the interception. Mayer’s kick made it 14-6 with 2:46 to play.

With the Hawks driving into Sheldon territory Logan Otis intercepted at the Sheldon 40 yard line. A 9 yard halfback pass from Hunter McDonald to Garret Lang capped a 60 yard drive. Mayer added the extra point and Sheldon took a 21-6 lead into halftime.

Sheldon got the ball to start the second half and drove 70 yards for the score with Logan Otis scoring from 19 yards out. The extra point was no good and the Orab lead was at
27-6 with 10:59 to go in the third quarter.

Hunter McDonald who went over 200 yards in the game and over a thousand for the season broke loose for a 62 yard touchdown run. Trevor Mayer added the extra point and the lead went to 34-6 with 9:30 to play in the third quarter.

The final scoring of the season for Sheldon came on the end of a 96 yard drive as the Orabs got the ball on downs at their own 4 yard line. Tanner Whitsell capped the drive with a 4 yard run. The kick was no good and Sheldon led 40-6 with 9:28 to play.

Hartley Melvin Sanborn would score the final two touchdowns of the night as Hunter Kuehl capped a 72 yard drive with a 4 yard run with 7:08 to play that made it 40-12. the final score of the game was a 40 yard touchdown pass from Evan Metzler to Trenton Schirmer that made the score 40-18 with 2:46 to play and that would be the final score.

Sheldon finishes the year at 4-5. With Emmetsburg posting a win over LeMars Gehlen Friday night HMS earned the final playoff spot in 1A district 1 as they knocked off Gehlen in a head to head matchup. Both finished with 3-3 district record with the Hawks wrapping up the year at 4-5 on the season. The first round of the football playoffs in Iowa open up on Wednesday night.
