The Sheldon Orab Basketball Teams split a Siouxland Conference doubleheader with George Little Rock in George Tuesday night. The Mustangs held off the Orabs for a 56-53 win. The boys game went to Sheldon 66-50.
In the girls game the Mustangs led at all the breaks 16-4 at the end of the first quarter, 31-19 at the end of the half and 40-31 at the end of the third quarter. The Orabs came out strong in the fourth quarter outscoring the Mustangs 22-16 to briefly take the lead. With time winding down Danielle Eben scored to put the G-LR up by two 55-53. Jessica Sandbulte went 1-of-2 at the line to make the final 56-53 after the Orabs were unable to score on their final possession.
Keely Kruse led all scorers with 16 points. Sandbulte and Eben hit for 13 apeace. Sheldon was led by Emily Johnson who led the fourth quarter surge with 11 points in the fourth quarter alone on the way to 15 on the night. Krista Bousema joined her in double figures with 12 points.
With the win George Little Rock is even in the conference at 6-6 and 9-6 for the season. Sheldon falls to 5-7 in the Siouxland and 5-9 for the year.
In the boys game Sheldon led 16-15 at the end of the first quarter. At halftime the lead was 36-24. at the end of the third Sheldon led 56-36 on the way to a 66-50 win.
The Mustangs got a game high 27 points from Tanner Ver Steg who dropped in 7 three pointers, a pair of 2 point field goals and went 2-of-2 from the free throw line. Austin Hayenga hit double figures with 10 points. As a team G-LR knocked down 8 three point buckets for the game.
Sheldon was led by Nate Oostra who erupted for 12 of his 20 points in the third quarter. Also in double figures was Dallas Ennema with 12 points and James Gradert with 10. With reserves seeing most of the fourth quarter Sheldon saw 9 players make their way into the scorebook.
With the win Sheldon moves to 10-1 in the conference and 13-1 on the season. The Mustangs stand at 1-10 in the conference and 2-12 for the season.
Up next for Sheldon will be a home doubleheader with the Okoboji Pioneers on Friday night.
