Orabs win 34-6 at Pocahontas

Pocahontas Iowa — Sheldon improved to 6-2 on the season and 4-2 in the district with a 34-6 win over the Indians Friday night in Pocahontas. With the win the Orabs keep their playoff hopes alive heading into the season finale next week against Cherokee at Orab Field.

The Orabs opened the scoring followiing a fumble recovery at the Pocahontas Area 21 yard line. Brady Prescott scored the first points of the game on a 1 yard run. Brian Bernal added the extra point and the Orabs were up 7-0 with 8:22 left in the first quarter.

Sheldon scored again in the first quarter as they capped a 68 yard drive with a Brennan Radke to Tyler Merley 18 yard touchdown pass. Christian Ozuna added the extra point and the lead was up to 14-0 with 2:23 left in the first quarter.

Pocahontas Area got on the board following a bad punt snap by the Orabs was covered by the Indians at the Sheldon 19 yard line. The short drive came to an end when Matt Kopriva scored on a 3 yard run. The kick was no good and the Sheldon lead was cut to 14-6 with 8:44 left in the half.

Sheldon answered with a 53 yard drive that ended when Brennan Radke went in from a yard out. A 2-point conversion attempt was no good and Sheldon led 20-6 with 6:31 left in the half.

The Orabs added another score just before the half as a 66 yard drive came to a close when Tyler Merley hit Tyler Lode for a 49 yard touchdown pass with 1:29 left in the half. Radke hit Kyle Boerhave  for the 2-point conversion and the Orab lead was 28-6 at the half.

Sheldon closed the scoring in the third quarter as Cody Vaselaar recovered a muffed punt at the Pocahontas Area 11 yard line. Prescott capped the short drive with a 4 yard run and Sheldon was up 34-6 with 1:00 minute left in the third quarter. The extra point was no good and 34-6 would be the final score.

With the win Sheldon is 6-2 on the year and 4-2 in the district. With the loss Pocahontas Area remains winless on the season. The Orabs close the regular season at home next Friday needing a win and some help to make the playoffs. The Indians will close the year at home against Sioux Center.
