Orabs win on Senior Night Over Pioneers

Sheldon Iowa — Sheldon celebrated a 40-21 win over Okoboji on senior night Friday at Orab Field. A touchdown with exactly a minute to play in the half gave Sheldon the lead for good.

Okoboji opened the scoring with a 26 yard touchdown pass from Tyler Adams to Jay Swygman. A 2-point pass from Swygman to Jaden Heller made it 8-0 Pioneers with 6:46 left in the first quarter.

Sheldon answered with a 66 yard drive capped by a reverse pass to the quarterback as Brendan Cain tossed it to Tyrel Lindemann who then hit Kaleb Ackerman in the end zone for the score. The extra point was no good but the Orabs were within 8-6 with 3:22 left in the first quarter.

The two teams proceeded to trade touchdowns after that. Okoboji was first capping a 70 yard drive with Luke Bossard scoring on a 1 yard run. Austin Noble added the extra point and it was 15-6 Pioneers with 9:18 left in the second quarter.

The Orabs countered with a 70 yard drive capped by Brian Bernal’s 2 yard run. A 2-point attempt was no good but the Okoboji  lead was cut to 15-12 with 6:05 left in the first half.

Sheldon took the lead for good as they started a 91 yard drive with just over 2 minutes to go in the half. It ended when Ackerman found Lindemann for a 20 yard score. Brian Bernal’s kick was good and Sheldon had their first lead at 19-15 with a minute left in the half. It was a lead the Orabs would maintain for the rest of the game.

Sheldon scored the first two touchdowns of the second half. Ackerman went up the middle on a quarterback keeper and 55 yards later had outrun a pair of defenders for the score. Bernal’s kick was good and Sheldon led 26-15 with 6:15 left in the third.

In the fourth quarter a 54 yard Orab drive ended on a 10 yard run by Lindemann off the jet sweep for the score. Bernal’s kick made it 33-15 Sheldon with 9:03 left to play.

Okoboji scored on a 74 yard drive as Adams found Swygman for another 26 yard score with 7:39 left to play. A 2-point attempt was no good the the Orab lead was 33-21 .

Sheldon finished the scoring with 4:45 left to play when Ackerman capped a 65 yard drive with an 11 yard pass to Mitchel Wolf. Bernal added his fourth extra point of the night to make the final 40-21 in favor of the Orabs.

With the win Sheldon is 3-5 on the year and 2-2 in the district. Okoboji is now 2-6 for the year and 0-4 in the district.

Sheldon will take on district front runner Central Lyon George Little Rock in Rock Rapids next Friday. The Pioneers finish the season at home against MOC Floyd Valley.
