Pioneers Open District Play With win over Orabs

football 1Sheldon Iowa — Okoboji downed Sheldon at Orab Field Friday night 30-14 in the district opener for both teams.

Okoboji opened the scoring with a 64 yard 9 play drive capped by a Noah Bouse 3 yard touchdown run. Kicker Jacob Dodge hit Brandon Svoboda for the 2-point conversion and the Pioneers were up 8-0 with 8:28 to play in the first quarter.

The Pioneers got on the board again with an Matt Eckard to Alex Heller 26 yard touchdown pass. Dodge would execute the fake and run it in for the 2-point conversion. That made it 16-0 with :38 seconds left in the first quarter.

Sheldon got on the board with a 6 play 75 yard drive that finished early in the second quarter. Colby Kleinhesselink scored on a 5 yard touchdown run. Jaden Kleinhesselink scored on a quarterback keeper for the 2-point conversion and the Orabs had pulled to within 16-8 with 10:05 left in the half.

Okoboji found the endzone again before halftime as Eckard found Heller for an 11 yard touchdown pass. Dodge added the extra point and the Pioneers led 23-8 with 5:29 left in the half and that would be the halftime score.

The two teams traded scores in the second half. Sheldon got on the board first with a 3 yard Jaden Kleinhesselink touchdown run. The 2-point conversion attempt was no good and the Orabs had cut the lead to 23-14 with 7:20 to go in the third quarter.

The Pioneers put the game away with defensive stop at their own 13 yard line and then went 86 yards in 5 plays. Bouse scored his second touchdown of the game from the 5 yard line. Dodge added the extra point to make the score 30-14 with 4:15 to play and that would be the final.

With the win Okoboji improves to 2-1 on the season and  opens the district race at 1-0. Sheldon opens the season at o-3.

Up next for the Orabs will be a trip to Cherokee while the Pioneers host Spirit Lake.
