Raiders Sweep Doubleheader From DSU

Northwestern swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from Dakota State Saturday afternoon in Madison, S.D. The Red Raiders shut out DSU in game one, 5-0, and then defeated the hosts 9-5 in the nightcap. Northwestern improves its record to 8-4 this season.

Keely Bracelin pitched a complete-game, three-hitter in leading NWC to a game one win. The sophomore walked one and struck out five in earning her first shutout of the season and improving her record to 3-2 this year.

Northwestern managed nine hits in game one, scoring two runs in the third and one run in each of the fourth, sixth and seventh innings. Heidi Esdohr went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Lindsey Remien went 2-for-3. Kara Nonnemacher and Jillian Kleinhesselink recorded a run-scoring double.

Shelby Johnson

The Red Raider offense picked up and then some in game two, totaling 12 hits and scoring nine runs in the 9-5 win. Shelby Johnson had a career-high three doubles en route to a perfect 4-for-4 performance at the plate. The senior also drove in a career-high five runs. Esdohr went 2-for-4 for the second straight game and scored two runs while Katie Vande Voort added two hits and drove in one RBI.

Vande Voort improved to 4-1 on the mound, giving up a mere three hits and no earned runs in six innings of work. She struck out three and walked two. Alex Brower pitched the seventh inning and allowed three hits and two earned runs.

Northwestern will host Bellevue (Neb.) in its home opener on Tuesday, March 20 at 5/7:00pm.
