Sheldon and George Little Rock Split Basketball Doubleheader

BasketballGeorge Iowa — George Little Rock won the girls game 62-41 while the Orab boys took the nightcap 58-51 as the Mustangs and Orabs split a Siouxland Conference Basketball doubleheader Thursday night in George.

In the girls game the Mustangs ranked number 10 in the 1A poll led at all the breaks on route to the win. At the end of the first quarter it was 22-10, at halftime the lead was at 42-20. At the end of the third G-LR led 50-30.

Mariah Terhark had a game high 20 points for the Mustangs with Mia Graham adding 16. Kayla Van Meeteren led the Orabs with 10. Sydney Iedema was next with 8 points on the night.

With the win the Mustangs go to 3-2 for the year and 2-2 in the conference. Sheldon stands at 2-3 for the season and 1-3 in the Siouxland.

 

In the boys game Sheldon got some key free throws along with a key 3-pointer from Ian Jongewaard in the fourth quarter. Kyle Boerhave hit for six points in the final quarter as the Orabs held off the Mustangs 58-51. G-LR saw Jayden Mauldin knock down a pair of threes  in a 9 point fourth quarter effort. Austin Jensen hit  a 3 and Josh Haken hit two of his 5 threes in the fourth quarter.

Sheldon led at all the breaks up 16-10 at the end of the first quarter and 32-24 at halftime. At the end of the third quarter the Mustangs kept the Orab lead at eight trailing 40-32 before the Orabs went on to win 58-51.

On the night Jongewaard hit for a game high 20 points including four 3-points buckets. He was joined in double figures by Jayden Kleinhesselink with 11 points. G-LR was led by Haken with 19 points including five 3-pointers. Mauldin added 16 points for the Mustangs with 12 of them coming in the second half.

With the win Sheldon moves to 3-1 on the year and 3-0 in the conference. The Mustangs are 1-3 on the year and 0-3 in the conference.

Friday night finds Sheldon at MOC Floyd Valley and the Mustangs hosting Sioux Center.
