Sheldon Closes Regular Season at 7-2 With Win Over HMS

The Sheldon Orabs wrapped up the regular season at 7-2 with a 41-21 home win over Hartley Melvin Sanborn Friday night. HMS finishes the regular season at 5-4 with both teams advancing to Wednesday first round of the playoffs.

Sheldon got off to a quick start as Chris Balster intercepted a pass on the first offensive play of the game and returned it 32 yards for a score. Trevor Mayer added the extra point and Sheldon had an early 7-0 lead with: 59 seconds gone in the contest.

Sheldon scored on their first offensive possession going 75 yards with Balster finding running back Hunter McDonald for a 24 yard touchdown pass. Mayer’s extra point made it 14-0 with 8:49 left in the first quarter.

Later in the first quarter Sheldon recovered a fumble at the Hawks 33 yard line. A Balster to Tom Brown 10 yard touchdown pass and the conversion kick by Mayer put the Orange up 21-0 with 3:42 left in the first quarter.

HMS got on the board with a 64 yard drive as the two teams began to trade scores. Casey Dorhout hit Evan Metzler for a 10 yard score to end the drive. Julian Dittmann added the extra point and the Orab lead was 21-7 with 11:26 to go in the second quarter.

Sheldon answered with a 70 yard drive capped by a Matt Dykstra 34 yard run. Mayer’s kick made it 28-7 Sheldon with 8:35 to play in the half.

HMS answered that score with a 66 yard drive capped by a Jacob Clark 3 yard run. Dittmann’s extra point cut the Sheldon lead to 28-14 with 2:59 left in the second quarter.

Sheldon responded with a 72 yard drive capped by a Balster 1 yard sneak that came with: 02 seconds left in the half. The extra point by Mayer gave the Orabs a 35-14 first half lead.

In the third quarter with the Hawks driving Sheldon forced a fumble and recovered at their own 17 yard line. Balster capped an 83 yard drive with a 46 yard run to make the score 41-14 with: 50 seconds left in the third quarter.

Hartley Melvin Sanborn closed out the scoring with a 69 yard fourth quarter drive. Casey Dorhout went in from 11 yards out and Dittmann added the extra point to make the final 41-21 Sheldon.

Both teams move on to the playoffs on Wednesday night. Sheldon will take a 7-2 record into the Class 2A first round at home against 7-2 Forest City. Hartley Melvin Sanborn at 5-4 on the year will open the Class 1A playoffs at 9-0 IKM manning.
