South O’Brien on to Substate

South O'Brien WolverineThe South O’Brien Wolverines are headed to Substate following a 53-45 win over Boyden Hull in the Class 1A District 1 final at Sioux Center Thursday night. Their opponent will be Greattinger Terrill Ruthven Ayrshire who defeated Newell Fonda 53-48 for the District 2 title. Tip off will be at 7:00 at the field house in Spencer.

Boyden Hull led 15-9 at the end of the first quarter. South O’Brien would get the game back to even in the second quarter and take a 29-23 lead into half time. At the end of the third quarter the lead was up to 39-30. Down the stretch the Wolverines were able to secure the win at the free throw line. In the final quarter South O’Brien who came in shooting 73% on the year as a team from the line went 10-of-14 in the fourth quarter. For the game the Wolverines were 14-of-19.

South O’Brien was led by Dallas Jalas with a game high 24 points. His line included four 3-point buckets and a 6-of-8 performance from the free throw line in the fourth quarter. Kyle Paulsen hit for 9 points with Damon Struve adding 8 more.

Boyden Hull got 16 points from Chandler Brunsting and 12 each from Dalton Moser and Justin Schmidt.

With the win South O’Brien improves to 21-3. The Comets end the year at 19-5. The 8th ranked Wolverines will meet unranked Greattinger Terrill Ruthven Ayrshire in Saturday’s Substate game with a Boys State Tournament berth on the line. Tip off at 7:00 in Spencer and we’ll bring you the broadcast on KIWA FM 105.3.
