Spirit Lake Downs Boyden Hull Rock Valley in District Baseball

baseball Spencer Iowa — Spirit Lake opened Class 3A District tournament play with a 13-3 semi final win over Boyden Hull Rock Valley in a  game played at Spencer. With the win the eighth ranked Indians advance to the District final back in Spencer on Monday. Their opponent will be ninth ranked Spencer who eliminated Storm Lake 16-0 in the other semifinal Friday night.

The Indians opened the scoring with a run in the first inning. Jeremiah Eldridge doubled and came in to score on an rbi single by Jac Radcliffe.

Spirit Lake broke the game open with a 10 run third inning highlighted by a trio of home runs. Tony Eckert hit a two run shot and a solo home run in the inning. Logan Backhaus added a solo home run as well.

A run in the fourth inning made it 12-0 in favor of Spirit Lake as Eldridge reached and scored on an rbi single by Justin Jones.

Boyden Hull Rock Valley scored three in the top of the fifth inning. Shane Solberg reached on an error and scored on a ground ball off the bat of Bryce Van Beek. Travis Van EgDom Doubled and came home when Wyatt Cannegieter launched a two-run homer to left field that pulled the Nighthawks within 11-3 at the time.

Spirit Lake would hold the Nighthawks scoreless the rest of the way to post the six inning win 13-3.

Gavin DeVos went 6 innings for the win. he gave up 6 hits, 2 earned run, walked 3 and struck out 6.

Bryce Van Beek went the first two and two third innings for the Nighthawks and took the loss. Through the first two innings he had given up just 2 hits.

With the win Spirit Lake improves to 24-7 on the year while Boyden Hull Rock Valley end s the season at 16-15.
