Spirit Lake Downs Nighthawks in Region Semis

softballSpirit Lake scored 2 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a come from behind 3-2 win over Boyden Hull Rock Valley in the 3A Regional semi finals at Boyden Friday night.

Kelsey Delperdang reached second on an error to lead off the bottom of the seventh and scored on a double to right field by Bailee Newman that tied the score at 2-2. Newman would later steal third and scored the game winner on a two out infield single by Caitlyn Roberts that made the Indians 3-2 winners and advanced them to the Region finals.

The two teams traded scores in the first inning as Boyden Hull Rock Valley scored first. Lead off hitter Kensy Vande Hoef opened the game with a single and later scored on a double to center field by CJ Van Der Zwaag.

Spirit Lake countered in the home half of the first when Bailee Newman homered to center field to tie the score at 1-1.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the fifth when the Nighthawks went up 2-1. Katie Greene opened the inning with a double. Pinch runner Baily Ten Haken was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Alexis Mousel. Kaitllyn Van Der Zwaag came on to pinch hit and lifted a ball just deep enough to right field to score Ten Haken from third with the go ahead run. A 2-1 Nighthawk lead would hold up until the late charge by Spirit Lake in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Sophomore Bailee Newman earned the win giving up 2 earned runs on 5 hits. She walked 1 and struck out 10. Junior CJ Van Der Zwaag took the loss. She gave up 2 earned runs on 7 hits, walked 1 and struck out 3.

With the win Spirit Lake improves to 22-8 on the year and will meet Osage who eliminated Garner Hayfield Ventura 7-1. The 3A Region 2 final is set for Emmetsburg Monday at 7pm.

Boyden Hull Rock Valley finishes the year at 22-2 and ranked number 7 in the final 3A softball poll.
