Spirit Lake on to State Baseball Tournament With Win Over Western

baseballSpirit Lake will move on to the State Class 2A Baseball Tournament following a 5-0 win over Western Christian in substate play Tuesday night in Spencer.

An unearned run in the first inning put the Indians up 1-0. Another unearned run in the bottom of the fifth made it 2-0 after five complete. In the bottom of the sixth Spirit Lake plated three more to put the game away.

The big blow was a one out double down the left field line by Nick Amundson that plated Paul Brown and Brandon Stoll who had reached in front of him. Amundson’s two run double pushed the score to 5-0.

Brandon Stoll was locked in on the mound striking out 12 while giving up just three hits. He did not walk a batter in the complete game win.

Western hits included a single from Colton Van Otterloo, a single from Grant Van Bemmel and a bunt single from Ross Te Slaa.

Tyler Van Engen took the loss. He struck out 6 in five and a third innings. He gave up 10 hits and 3 earned runs in taking the loss.

With the win Spirit Lake improves to 16-10 while Western finishes the year at 18-10.

 

In Class 1A Substate 1 Remsen St Mary’s turned back West Lyon 2-1 at Remsen to advance to the State Tournament.

In Class 3A LeMars plays host to Sioux City Heelan Wednesday night with the winner moving on to the State Tournament.
